Adding Blogs and RSS
We have been asked about how to have a blog included in the right hand column, under 'applicants' and 'students'. Our goal is to have as many 'relevant' blogs listed as are available, from bloggers applying to business schools and bloggers currently in business school.
In order for a blog to be listed it needs to have an RSS feed that we can 'subscribe'. The blogger program that you use (blogger, movable type etc.) should provide you the facility to turn on (or not) your RSS feed. Once you have turned the feed on, simply e-mail alexbr@wharton.upenn.edu (or leave a comment below) and we will then add your blog to the appropriate category. A link to your blog, and the headline of your most recent post, will then appear as long as it is one of the five most recent posts among bloggers within your category (applicant or student).
So what is RSS ? The acronym is associated with two meanings, Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. Either way it allows the site (a blog site in this case) to syndicate its content, and viewers can subscribe to the site's content through a web-based news aggregator such as bloglines. This essentially allows sites to push out new content to subscribers, rather than relying on the more typical web model of relying on viewers to return to the site to see if there is new information available. This is the more traditional use of RSS.
For this site, we are actually then publishing the feeds that we subscribe to so that our audience is able to keep up to date with new posts from the MBA applicant and MBA student world.
More detailed explanations can be found at: What is RSS? and Introduction to RSS.
