MBA ADMISSIONS BLOG!
Looking Ahead: Applying for Admission in Fall 2009

As we approach the end of this year's admissions season, we know that many candidates are beginning to think about applying to Wharton for admission in Fall 2009.  We very much appreciate your interest in the School, and we look forward to sharing with you our curriculum, community and culture.

Getting to Know Wharton

There are a variety of ways to get to know Wharton, including through our website, at our events around the world and by visiting campus.  Our events include general and diversity-targeted receptions, MBA fairs, student and alumni coffee chats, meet-and-greets, and online chats, to name a few.  Over the summer, we will begin to post details about events at which Wharton MBA Admissions staff, alumni or current students will be present this fall and winter.  Our event calendar is continually updated, so please check back periodically to find out when Wharton will be in your city.

For those applicants interested in visiting Wharton, we host visitors every day that the office is open and offer an information session given by an admissions officer.  In the fall, once classes are back in session, we allow applicants to experience Wharton further by attending a class, having lunch with current students and taking a campus tour.

Fall 2009 Application

Our application will be available online for Fall 2009 applications by late summer.  However, we will post our application deadlines, as well as this year's essay questions, right here on our blog before the application goes live (generally, by mid-summer).

For those applicants eager to learn more about the MBA degree now, or to start preparing for the application process, we encourage you to check out the information about making the MBA decision and preparing a successful application on our website.  You may also be interested in visiting our student2student discussion board, on which current Wharton students, alumni and admissions officers answer questions from applicants (as well as dispel myths!) about Wharton and the admissions process.

Again, thank you for your interest in Wharton, and we look forward to reading your application.

Wharton MBA Waitlist Guidelines

Congratulations to all our newly admitted Round 2 applicants!

For applicants who were placed on the waitlist, you will receive an email (if you haven't already) outlining our waitlist policies.  A copy of this email is provided below.

Dear Waitlist Candidate:

As a waitlist candidate, you may have some questions about the admissions process going forward.  Below is some information about waitlist procedures that will be helpful to you:

·         We will retain your name on the waitlist for consideration at the end of the next round unless you request your application be withdrawn. If you would like to withdraw, please e-mail mba.admissions@wharton.upenn.edu, using the subject header: “Waitlist Remove.”  All waitlist candidates will be notified of any change in their admissions status by the Round 3 decision release date of May 18, 2006.

·         In the spirit of fairness and equity, we will not accept additional materials for inclusion in your application. In this same spirit, we do not offer another interview.

·         There is no point person in the office for the waitlist. All waitlist decisions are handled by the Admissions Committee.

·         Feedback to candidates is not offered to candidates while they are on the waitlist.

·         There is no rank order to the waitlist.

·         The chances of being admitted off the waitlist are hard to predict since much depends on the strength of the pool in subsequent rounds.  Historically, the admit rate has varied from year to year and has very little correlation with the number of candidates placed on the waitlist.

Thank you in advance for honoring these guidelines.  We sincerely appreciate your interest in the Wharton School.

Essential Rd 2 Decision Release Deadline News

Greetings from Admissions! Here's the latest information you need regarding Round 2:

Bon chance.

10 Mar 2006 04:22 PM in Application Processing | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack

Important Info for Round 2 Wharton MBA Applicants

Here’s a quick overview of essential information for all our Round 2 applicants:

If your online account reads “Complete for Round 2,” your application has all the required materials, has been processed by the Operations Team, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for review.

If your online account reads “Received,” then the Operations Team needs to process your online application and any materials submitted by hard copy.  Operations is emailing all applicants with this a “Received” status to notify them of what information is missing.

Interviews are by invitation only, after a thorough review of an application. Invitations are released daily and will continue to be released until 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Thursday, February 16th.  Candidates who are not invited for an interview by February 16th will be notified that they are no longer being considered for admission.

Due to the nature and complexity of the admissions process, there is no particular order in which invitations are released.

The deadline for completing interviews is Thursday, March 9th.  Interviews options include (Please note: all interviews carry equal weight in the evaluation process):

Financial Aid, including loans and merit fellowships, must be applied for by admitted students. Complete details are provided at the time of admission.  Awards are made upon review by our Fellowship Committee.

Candidates who interview will receive their final admissions decision by 5:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 16th.

Interview Invite Logistics (Round 2) The following entry on Interview Invite Logistics, posted for Round 1 applicants, applies to Round 2.

Note the mid-release date for Round 2 is: February 17, thus for those not invited for an interview, you will hear on that date and not before (those invited for an interview will hear anytime upto and including that date.

Also, the entry states:

While we begin reviewing applications somewhat in the order they arrive

It is more correct to state we begin reviewing applications somewhat in the order they turn 'complete'.

Round 1 Mid-Release Decisions

As you may be aware, yesterday (November 18) we released many decisions to those applicants who were not offered an interview (and thus admissions) to Wharton.  It is always a tough task to deliver bad news, and using the internet to do so, while more efficient (more timely etc.) it can certainly also provide a medium for those who receive the bad news to respond.  It is often surprising however to see the response of those who are not admitted at this time (this thread on student 2 student is an example) and we do sincerely wish those who were not successful success with the remainder of the application process, and perhaps with Wharton in a subsequent year.

The issues highlighted by the original poster in the above thread were also covered, in part, in the following blog entry:

It is also important to note there is a learning curve associated with developing a strong application, so while applicants will tend to prioritize their applications and use that order of priority as the order of submissions, it is seldom the case that the first application you submit is your best application.

19 Nov 2004 05:19 AM in Application Processing | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack

Interview invite logistics We often see questions on student 2 student about when to expect an interview invite if an invite is forthcoming. This post is designed to answer most of those questions (feel free to add more questions to the comment section).

As you may know, we invite candidates to interview once their application is complete, has been reviewed by more than one member of the admissions committee, and is approved for an interview. If an interview invite is not offered, the candidate is not going to be offered admissions (and this decision will be released November 18).

While we begin reviewing applications somewhat in the order they arrive (we batch applications up once a week for distribution), the reason the interview invite may not necessarily be released in the same order can be twofold:

a. there are multiple readers for the application (two in most cases), and readers have different schedules, thus the second read will not always be complete within a set timeframe. For example, as a second reader I have not had the chance to begin reads yet as I have just returned from travel, while I know at least one of my colleagues has (not to worry, I will begin today). There are reads waiting for my review for sure (i.e. just because I have not been here does not mean the work has gone elsewhere).

b. an application may require additional review if the initial readers have not come to a clear consensus, thus further delaying the time it takes to come to the interview invite / no decision.

All applications for round 1 will have had their review complete, and the interview invites released by 5 PM, EST, November 18. Typically many invites will go out within two weeks of that date, and while a few have been released thus far, it will still remain a small number per day for another week or so for sure as we fully gear up for reading. Invites will only go out during the working week, monday - friday, 9 AM to 5 PM east coast time.
