Wharton and Penn Law Create Three-Year JD/MBA Degree

Two of the nation's top law and business schools - the Wharton School and the Law School at the University of Pennsylvania - are launching an accelerated three-year program leading to both the JD and MBA degrees.

Students in the new program will spend the first year in Law School and the following summer in four Law and Wharton courses designed specifically for the three-year JD/MBA. The second and third years will include a combination of Law and Wharton courses, including capstone courses in the third year and work experience in law, business, finance, or the public sector in the summer between the second and third years.

Applicants must be admitted by both schools in order to enroll in the three-year program.  Students in the joint program will be required to meet the Law School's mandate to perform 70 hours of supervised legal work in a pro-bono setting in order to graduate.

Information can be found on Penn Law's website here.

Wharton Says Goodbye to Thomas Caleel, Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid

After three years of service, Thomas Caleel (WG’03) will be vacating his role as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid as of 30 June, 2008.  In his role as Director, Thomas has been a passionate ambassador of the School and the MBA Program, and Wharton faculty, staff and students alike are enormously grateful to have had Thomas serve the School in this important role.

Thomas has spent nearly ten years of his life at the University of Pennsylvania, first as an undergraduate, then as an MBA student, and most recently leading the admissions team for the MBA program.  Prior to joining Wharton MBA Admissions in 2005, he had a wide range of experience as an entrepreneur, venture financier, and chief executive, especially in international markets.  His background includes managing international development for a retail start-up; building private equity transactions in the former Soviet Republics; and raising public and private funds across the energy, recycling, and life sciences sectors.

Anjani Jain, Vice Dean and Director of Wharton's Graduate Division and Adjunct Professor of Operations and Information Management, will serve as Acting Director until a permanent Director is named.  In his role as Vice Dean, he oversees academic, co-curricular, admissions, placement, communication training, and leadership development activities of the MBA and Wharton MBA for Executives programs.

Wharton Student-Alumni Group Receives Award from Doctors of the World

The Board of Directors of Doctors of the World--USA awarded the 2008 Health and Human Rights Leadership Award to Wharton Health International Volunteers Project (WHIVP) in recognition of its contributions to assisting in the creation and development of sustainable health systems in the developing world. The award was given to the organization in recognition of 11 years of student volunteering to healthcare nonprofit organizations in Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe. Past winners have included Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, and a long list of well-known world leaders. Graduating Wharton students Katie Vahle, Darshan Prabhu, Joyce Liao, and incoming chair Lisa Ramon accepted on behalf of WHIVP.

WHIVP is an MBA student-alumni organization drawing mostly from students majoring in Health Care Systems at Wharton. WHIVP harnesses the skills and creative energy of students to strengthen and improve healthcare systems in communities dealing with limited resources and severe health problems. Established in 2001, WHIVP’s projects are student-organized, student-run, and student-led, and seek to engage local communities in finding solutions that are both sustainable and specifically designed to address local needs. The students work in the field as well as back on campus over periods of months on projects, and many of the projects are handed off from one team to another as students graduate. Many stay involved as alumni and Wharton faculty often serve as advisors to the student teams. As evidence of the commitment on the part of the students their participation is largely funded personally with occasional support of sponsors.

Doctors of the World--USA, an affiliate of Medecins du Monde, mobilizes the health sector to promote and protect these and other basic human rights and civil liberties for all people, in the United States and in the developing world. In collaboration with a network of affiliates around the world and in partnership with local communities, DOW works where health is diminished or endangered by violations of human rights and civil liberties. DOW provides essential care and services while training community residents to carry on the mission of health at the conclusion of our efforts. DOW combines these services with appropriate advocacy to ensure maximum impact. To achieve its goals, we mobilize American health care professionals as volunteers, bringing their expertise and idealism to those who need it most.

One of the WHIVP-DOW projects is described at: http://www.dowusa.org/news/feature-stories/detail/fall07-wharton

Wharton's European Connection

Wharton has long been known for its global reach. Less well known, perhaps, is how this translates into networks and ties to specific regions like Europe.

Many of you are by now familiar with the unique Wharton/INSEAD alliance created in 2001. What you may not know is that Zurich, Switzerland is the site of one of this year's three Global Alumni Forums. Or that Wharton has established a cooperative venture between ECR Europe and three other leading business schools to bring leadership development programming to senior executives in Europe's consumer goods industry. Or that Europe is home to 11 alumni clubs, including clubs in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

These are but a few of the ties that make the Wharton MBA program a destination for many prospective European students. To learn more...

Wharton MBA Women Make the News

Women and glass ceilings. Women and MBAs. Women and Wharton. Just how do Wharton women measure up?  Quite nicely, thank you.

Two Wharton women MBAs to make the news this week include  Rachel Cullen and Beth Kaplan. Rachel Cullen was appointed to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ice Cream of Dean Foods (the third largest US ice cream and frozen novelty company).

The Wharton MBA enabled Rachel to make the move from analytical chemist with Union Carbide to business development and marketing positions at Kraft Foods before moving to Dean Foods.

Beth Kaplan  was named a board member of Blackboard, Inc. a leading provider of enterprise software applications and related educational innovation services that connect people and technology.

The Wharton MBA prepared Ms. Kaplan for brand management and marketing positions in several leading retailers and consumer products companies. She has served as executive vice president and general manager for Bath & Body Works, senior executive vice president of marketing and merchandising at Rite Aid Drugstores, president and general manager of Noxell, and as a general manager of several Procter & Gamble food division brands. Ms Kaplan is also a member of the board of overseers of the Wharton School of Business.

Wharton women prove the value of the MBA and the value of the Wharton brand.
