MBA ADMISSIONS BLOG!
Feedback Please!

We are in the midst of planning for next year and are looking for feedback on the technology we currently use for our admissions web space.  Please, if you have any feedback for the admissions site, student-2-student, student diaries and / or this blog that would be great.  If you have other ideas of technology we should explore, please comment.  Also we are looking at better integration amongst the various resources, so if you have ideas, again, let us know.

AdcomBlog's e-mail address

We recently realised we did not have a dedicated e-mail address for this blog!  So here it is adcomblog@wharton.upenn.edu. Please use this e-mail to have your blog listed on the student and applicant blog lists, contact us with any general questions, and to propose an entry for a 'guest' blog (the latter we will explain once we have our first guest blog posted).

Sharing our google results (internet marketing).

It is quite interesting to view the referer statistics and see how people manage to come across this site. The following are the last ten google searches that resulted in a view of this site (over the last four hours):

rank 1 of 33,800

I am not sure what this all means, but I think it is quite funny to see we rank number one for a search for Chicago, one and two for two different Harvard searches and one for a search, in Japanese, for a Yale blog!

Any thoughts ?

Flattering Feedback

We have received some very flattering feedback on the this blog from Diva Marketing. Establishing this blog has been a very interesting experience, and we hope to continue to create something of interest to MBA applicants around the world. (And thanks for the promotion too!)

Subscribing to the Wharton Journal Feed.

We have just added the Wharton Journal feed to the left hand column of this blog. (As you may know the left hand column of this blog is focused on Wharton, the right hand column is focused on the wider industry).  We hope you agree the Wharton Journal is an outstanding resource for those wanting to keep up with campus news and student issues, on a weekly basis.

If you have a news reader you can subscribe directly to the feed: http://www.whartonjournal.com/articles.rss

If you have a web-site, and want to include the feed (as we have done), use the code:

<h2>Wharton Journal</h2>

<ul>

<script language="JavaScript" type=""

src="http://mba.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/rss/feed/wj_js.php"></script>

<script language="JavaScript" type="">

for (i = 0; i < wj_links.length; i++) {

document.writeln ("<li><a href=\"" + wj_links[i].link + "\">" +

wj_links[i].title + "</a>");

}

</script>

<li><a href="http://www.whartonjournal.com">More...</a></li>

</ul>

Adding Blogs and RSS

We have been asked about how to have a blog included in the right hand column, under 'applicants' and 'students'. Our goal is to have as many 'relevant' blogs listed as are available, from bloggers applying to business schools and bloggers currently in business school.

In order for a blog to be listed it needs to have an RSS feed that we can 'subscribe'. The blogger program that you use (blogger, movable type etc.) should provide you the facility to turn on (or not) your RSS feed. Once you have turned the feed on, simply e-mail alexbr@wharton.upenn.edu (or leave a comment below) and we will then add your blog to the appropriate category. A link to your blog, and the headline of your most recent post, will then appear as long as it is one of the five most recent posts among bloggers within your category (applicant or student).

So what is RSS ? The acronym is associated with two meanings, Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. Either way it allows the site (a blog site in this case) to syndicate its content, and viewers can subscribe to the site's content through a web-based news aggregator such as bloglines. This essentially allows sites to push out new content to subscribers, rather than relying on the more typical web model of relying on viewers to return to the site to see if there is new information available.  This is the more traditional use of RSS.

For this site, we are actually then publishing the feeds that we subscribe to so that our audience is able to keep up to date with new posts from the MBA applicant and MBA student world.

More detailed explanations can be found at: What is RSS? and Introduction to RSS.

Quick Updates We have made a few updates to the Reception Schedule for Multiple Schools page, which now includes UCLA--Anderson, Berkeley--Haas, Virginia--Darden and a few from INSEAD (assuming others will be posted soon). Note that some cities have pretty hectic schedules at this point!

We have also added a few 'applicant' and 'student' bloggers whose most recent entry links should appear on the right-hand-navigation. Others are still to be added.

Syndicating Wharton Feeds ? For anyone who may be interested in including some of the 'feeds' we have listed on the left hand navigation of this site, you can learn how to do it at hella's site. It is simply a case of copying and pasting the snippets of code into your own html!
